And here we have a brilliant slice of alternative pop from Brazil.
I’d pretty much decided to buy based on the brilliantly clever morphing rhythms of song two, and then it turns out she has a lovely voice, and plays a clarinet.
Clever songwriting, a knack for interesting rhythms, and an ear for melody. Highly experimental with a lot of highlights. This girl’s got it going on.
CAVALA is Maria Beraldo's first solo album (label RISCO). Her music shouts out the freedom of a lesbian woman, the new stage of a clarinetist who becomes composer and the expression of an artist who emerges in Brazil of 2018. From the top of her 30s, Maria composes the Brazilian musical scene as clarinetist and singer of Arrigo Barnabé's group and as a member of Quartabê. Immersed in São Paulo's musical universe, much teased by the weird world of Barnabé, and also in touch - recording and playing - with Elza Soares, Negro Leo, Iara Rennó, Rodrigo Campos, Laura Diaz (Teto Preto), Dante Ozzetti, Rômulo Fróes and other friends, Maria finds herself an author and in her first lead of compositions shows identity, accusing concise structures, few elements, short durations. Maria has received her Bachelor (2009) and Master (2013) degree in music, both from UNICAMP (University of Campinas - São Paulo).
